Britcon 2017

The Elephants WON!!!!!

The mad experiment of the Elephants worked, much to my surprise.  It was fun to see peoples expression when I deployed 10 elephants.

End result was three big wins and three winning draws.  It does help when you have an army of 18 battle groups, it allows you to loose a few.

At Britcon we were trying out the v1.9 rules that have been developed on the forum.  The only deviation from the forum rules were the points cost for mounted.

Game 1 vs Stephen's Burmese.

The two elephant armies line up against each other.  22 elephants on the table, 35 battle groups.

the table did seem to be sagging in the middle......

Stephen deployed with a mass of elephants on one side, plus a flank march.  Just what I needed, cav in my rear....

The Elephants advance!

I had my elephants more spread out, Stephen went with the big hammer option

All the elephants charge, after the bow shooting proved to be ineffective

Somehow much to everyones surprise, the foot held and proceeded to break all the elephants in a few turns.  Once done, the rest of the Burmese were rapidly wrapped up.

Game 2 vs Keith's Japanese

The great clash of a Vegetable Jalfrezzi with Garlic Naan vs Sushi

Both armies looked at each other and went for the simple tactic, line up and advance.
Who would be the winner?  Elephants or Armoured foot with Spears?

Elephants!!

Keith deployed a waterway to lock down a flank, which worked for me as well.  My army was designed to fill the entire deployment zone and then the flanks.

 The Japanese camp
 Japanese foot, all very pretty.

The lines advance, shooting not proving very effective, the Samurai had armour.

 The two lines crash together.
The Samurai found that spear is good, Elephants is better.
 2nd to last game
More Samurai
Lynette had a different composition to Keith, she went for more average troops, but a lot more of them.
17 battle groups worth

Lynette was the only opponent to actually kill any elephants

the result was a winning draw to the Elephants, but if we had a had a few more turns, I was in a world of trouble with Samurai charging my troops in the rear.

Britcon 2016

Off to Britcon for the FoGR competition.

There are a lot of very good players with hard foot armies, so, it's going to be interesting.

I couldn't decide what army to bring so brought my army from last year.  I don't have a good feeling this year......

Britcon 2015 results

So,

the changes to the UK FoGR scene haven't yet worked for me.

With the requirement for 24 foot for 4 artillery has neutered my preferred style of mounted and I need to learn how to deal with massed foot.

In the end, I got 6th and was happy with that.

I got trashed the first game and then got stuck for a few rounds and couldn't make the break I needed to make up for my mistake.

Now, to learn how to break or deal with massed foot armies.....

Britcon 2015 Runners & Riders

Right, that's it!

Britcon 2015

Only a few weeks to go till Britcon 2015 and I have no idea of what to bring.

They are running with the new restriction of 6 bases of battle foot per artillery.

So, to get four artillery, I need 24 bases of real foot.

There goes the seven battle groups of superior mounted.

They are using the same restrictions for The Worlds in Lisbon, so, Britcon will be a test run.

Currently thinking of Imperial Spanish, Later 30 Years War Germans and League of Ausburg.

Got to submit the list by the 27th of July, no stress.

ARRRGH!

Britcon 2014 wrap up

Cough, splutter, that was Britcon.

So, things for next year, don't expect to do well at Britcon if you have a raging head cold.

I ended up 10th, five draws and a big win.

It was a funny comp, I lost my voice on the first game and resorted to passing notes to my opponents to communicate.  As you expect, no sympathy at all!  Lots of friendly heckling like " Hey Simon, whats the rule for this?"  "Come on, speak up!".

Lets hope my voice is back by Koblenz.....

Britcon 2013

Game 1 vs 30 Years War French 16 - 9 win

The two armies line up and eye each other up.....

The Savoy battle line

The two lines collide.  The French broke shortly afterwards.

Game 2 vs Scots Jacobite 18 - 7 win
 The scots line up

Game 3 vs Hapsburg Austrians 0 - 25 loss

The Austrians break out of their fortifications to come and pick a fight
Average vs Superior, who will win....
My cav try and chase some dragoons off, they got shot up shortly afterwards

Game 4 vs Later ECW Royalist 25 - 0 win

Martin and I had a practice game with our two armies at the club a few weeks before and he gave me a damm good kicking.

The Savoy advance up to meet the English

The armies eye each other up, wondering who will start first.

The Savoy opened up shortly afterwards and the English soon decided they had an appointment somewhere else.

Game 5 vs Japanese 25 - 0 win

The Japanese line up.  With only two mounted in Lynette's army, the Savoy were quite happy to move up and say hi.

The Savoy start advancing in formation
 The two armies collide

The Savoy line holds after the mighty clash of Japanese warriors.  The Savoy rally behind their banners and manage to will all the impact combats, resulting in a few Japanese units disrupting and fragmenting.

The Japanese had the tough choice of breaking off and risking being shot at on mass or staying in. They chose to remain fighting and one by one, broke.

Game 6 8 - 12 draw/lose vs 30 Years War Protestant.

My final game was against Alasdair, the raining FoGR champ as somehow I was in equal 2nd place.

EEEEK!

I completely forgot to take any photos of the battle.

The Savoy line only had one choice, defensive position number 1, box in and hold.  Alasdair's army comprised of seven battle groups of superior mounted, four battle groups of dragoons, two units artillery and two units of foot (the cheer leading squad).

I managed to hold out till time was called, having lost 14 out of 15 points and Alasdair lost 10 out of 15 which got me 3rd place.

Britcon 2013 Results

WOOOOOOT!

I got third place!

My Duchy of Savoy proved to be  a lot harder than expected and went all in, with four wins, a loss and a draw.

11 battle groups of mass shooting seemed to work very well, though, one thing that was missing was cannons.  I need my guns....

Photos to come later.

Britcon runners and riders

So,

the runners and riders has been posted

This is a tough pool

comments from the forum....

Of the UK's (oh alright England and Wales) top ranking players as per the BHGS Rankings, ten of the top 15 are in the RnR above, and two others have a reasonable excuse as they are part of the organising committee... We also have the reigning world champion and 8 other players ranked in the top 50

It's going to be a tough weekend

Britcon 2013

Britcon 2013 is only a few weeks away and I've finished my army ahead of schedule!

I'll be bringing my new Duchy of Savoy army for the FoGR comp.

It's a late period FoGR army (1693) and has lots of muskets, so, will be interesting to play.

The mounted in this period is pretty useless, so, I've gone all foot.

These are some of the foot units.

The Duchy seemed to outsource a lot of it's troop requirements, using French troops, so, lots of French banners.

Britcon 2012 wrap up

Back from Britcon 2012 and ended up middle of the pack.

It was a very tough competition (there are never enough bunnies) and I ended up with 66 points.

I had six great games with different armies each time, so, lots of variety

Game 1 0-25 vs Western Sudanese
Game 2 5-20 vs Later Imperial Spanish
Games 3 10-10 vs Early 30 years war Swedish
Game 4 20-5 vs West African Forest
Game 5 10-10 vs Later Imperial Spanish
Game 6 21-4 vs Later German States (Barvarian)

One big surprise of the comp was to see the power of foot armies over the mounted ones.  The guys who got 1st, 2nd and 3rd all had foot armies.

Good to see that you can win a comp with a proper army, unlike the mounted one I brought.

Everywhere I looked there were guys with guns who took me to pieces.

It was lots of fun and I can see my army changing for the next comp.

Britcon 2012

Off to Britcon this weekend for the FoGR competition.  It's an open competition and will be a tough one.

here is the runners and riders for the comp.
