ADLG-R Solo game Early 30 Years War Catholics vs 30 Years War Swedes

Since we are all locked down due to Covid-19, I've been using the time to finally update ADLG-R and get it another play test, this time solo.

The Armies

Tilly's German's

1 x Brilliant C n C
2 x Competent sub generals
4 x Heavy Cav Caracole
2 x Medium Cav Carbine
1 x Elite Later Tercio
3 x Early Tercios
2 x Dragoons
2 x Medium Artillery
2 x LH Carbine

Gustavus's Swedes

1 x Briliant C n C
2 x Competent sub generals
4 x Heavy Cav Pistol
1 x Hakkapeliita Heavy Cav Pistol Shock Impetuous Elite
2 x Reiters Medium Cav Carbine
4 x Elite Salvo with Regimental guns
2 x Salvo
2 x Dragoons
2 x Heavy Artillery

The table
The Swedes win the initiative and choose to attack in the German countryside (Plains).  They choose a nice open table to allow the Salvo units lots of space to manuver.

Turn 1
The Swedes

Swedish artillery scores the first hit of the game
The German line just forms up due to some very bad command pips (3 x 1's!)

Turn 2
Swedes contine pushing

Turn 3
The Germans need to rally.
The Dragoon is able to claim rear support fro the Reiters who are within 4UD

The Caracole unit claims rear support from the Tercio who is within 2UD

Turn 4
The Swedish mounted charge!

The Germans evade long.  The Swedes choose to pursue as a line due to the Impetuous Hakkapeliita

The Swedish foot take some accurate artillery fire.  As they are within short range and the difference on the dice is 3+, they take 2 cohesion.

The Swedes return the favour and break an artillery unit.

By the end of the Swedish turn, most units have one or more cohesion markers.

The Germans line up for the inevitable Swedish charge and cause lots of hits.

Turn 6
The Swedish centre charges
The first contact goes well for the Swedes with a 6-1 on an already wounded Tercio.  With Furious charge, that's four cohesion markers.
The Tercio wins the next round of melee

A German Tercio shoots and kills the Swedish cuirassier who was attempting to rally

Turn 7
The push of pike continues and the German centre starts to crumble with a Tercio collapsing.

The German left flank crumbles

A Swedish Salvo unit charges a German Tercio.  Even though it started the charge on the flank, the charge counts as a frontal charge as its a Tercio and its not engaged.

The Swedes conform

End of Turn 7
The Swedes break Tilly's Germans but take heavy losses.

ADLG-R 30 Years War German Catholics vs 30 Years War Swedish

Last ADLG-R game of the year. Sean wanted to bring out his newly based and painted later Tercios so it seemed approriate to bring out Gustavus and the Swedes. Gustavus won the initiative and invaded Germany. End result was a narrow win to the Swedes after the German centre collapsed. The Germans were not far from beating the Swedes, having broken thru the Swedish right flank and getting ready to charge the artillery and camp.
I tried using the Caracole mounted vs the German Pistol armed cav, it didn't go well. They spent most of their time running away and when pinned down in combat, lost spectacularily.

Turn 1
The armies deploy

The Swedes advance under artillery fire

The Swedish foot Charge!

Hmm, this doesn't bode well....

The Swedish line gets stuck in before the German mounted arrive in their flank

Break thru!
The Swedes break thru the German Later Tercios

The Germans break shortly afterwards.
The Swedes were two points off breaking as well

ADLG-R AAR Caroline Imperialist vs Imperial Spanish

Mike and I got ADLG-R on the table this week with a civil war between his Caroline Imperialist and my Imperial Spanish.

I won the initiative and chose to invade Spain in the plains.

The table was quite open with a water way running down one side.

Mike chose both enclosed fields and they landed on his side of the table.  One of them proved to be a right pain in the backside as a battle unit of arquebus sat in it and I could't dig them out.

The end result was a major win to Mike's Caroline Imperialist.  My Tercios failed to hold the line and my knights and heavy cav on both flanks failed to punch thru.

Better luck next time.

The Spanish line up and eye each other.

My centre comprised of four tercios and a colunella. Mike had three tercios and three keils.  One keil and one tercio was elite.

Both of us had mounted on the flanks with a arquebus unit advancing into the fields.

Turn 2
The Imperial spanish loose most of the shooting and are using carbine mounted to slow down the advancing tercio.

Turn 3
The Carbine troops re-deploy to the rear after getting shot up.
Mikes's tercios advance very aggressively.

Turn 5
The lines start to clash.  Two of my tercios take on an elite keil and those pesky two handed swordsmen start chipping away.

Meanwhile, on my right hand flank, my mounted wing has retreated and the tercio is about to do something very painful to my artillery......

The Caroline Imperialist line crashes in and I lose almost every round of combat.  I think I rolled five one or twos in a row.

My flank now exposed to a tercio and keil

Turn 7
Where did my centre go?
My army breaks shortly afterwards

ADLG-R AAR Early Imperial Spanish vs French Wars Catholic

Mike has been busy and rebased a bunch of figures that haven't seen the day of light in many years. The French won the initiative and invaded Spain. A large Swiss contingent had been hired and were up for a decent fight and came charging down the center of the table. There flanks were protected by Tercios, Gendarmes and Caracole Horse. An LMI Arquebus unit made a bee line towards the enclosed field and proved to be a right royal pain.

The Swiss with support

The Spanish deployed several Tercios and two Colunellas with heavy artillery in the middle and mounted on the flanks. The terrain didn't help and the Gendarme heavy left flank didn't add much value to the game.

The end result was a narrow win to the Spanish, breaking the French but took heavy casualties.
Mikes's Caracole units were the heros of the day, killing two Elite Gendarmes and a medium cav, while the Swiss were beaten back by some very accurate heavy artillery fire.

The Tercios with arquebus did manage to get some shooting in and took a beating before finally breaking

It was great to get that many Tercios, Keils and other large formations on the table and get nearly everyone in combat. You got the feel of the period.
Next week, more later ADLG-R with my Later Poles coming to the table for their first game.
